B31/33 valve guide install

Before pressing in valve guides for B31/33 iron head. There is a lower spring cap that fits under the shoulder of the guide on the inlet side, and a lower spring cap that fits over the guide, once the guide is pressed in, on the exhaust side. Is this correct???
Does any-one have an exploded diagram of the assembly arrangement.
I didn't take pictures when I dismantled them years ago, and now I pay the price.
Any help is much appreciated.
Best regards

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

The guide dosen't hold down the lower valve spring collar, it should just slide over it after the guide is fitted

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

I should know this but can't remember for certain so I'll have to take a look at some parts to confirm...

Either the spring seats fit over the guide shoulders on the 500 but under them on the 350...or it was dependent on the year...

Both methods were definitely used...I'll try to get to some parts tomorrow unless someone else comes up with the info...Ian

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

Both of my old B33s had the bottom collars fitted once guides were in place IE; slid over them. One was a 1949 other was a 1956.Hope this might help? Dave

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

Under the guide in my case. The hole for the collar would be too sloppy if fitted on top? Or the other way around, the hole too small.

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

I did this job just yesterday on a very late B33 alternator type and these fitted over the guide

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

Yes I have a box of assorted B31 and B33 iron head valves, springs ect.
Some of the caps slide along the guide and rest under the shoulder, other caps slide over the guide, once its pressed in. All the guides have the same OD, but the ID is different between inlet and exhaust.
With the B33, the larger diameter valve stem with the smaller head is exhaust, and the smaller stem with the bigger head is for inlet,
(as far as I can tell) Wished I had taken photo's now.
I dismantled 4 heads years ago for grit blasting, and cannot bloody remember the assembly arrangement.
As always I appreciate all your advise.

Re: B31/33 valve guide install

Not all the guides have the same O.D...The B31 inlet is smaller.

I should get some time to check it out this afternoon..Ian
