Dear Friends. I recently bought an AJS 1953 Model 16. Have some confusion with the dynamo. The dynamo on this bike is a E3LM. Do I have the right one? It has just one screw on the body. From the manual it says it should have an E3N. I am wondering if I got a Matchless G3L dynamo. The end casting just doesnt mesh with the clutch inner cover. Can I just change the end casting (This has a different pattern) to use the same dynamo or would it need complete replacement. Any inputs will be highly helpful.....John

You are a bit vague in description can you stick a photo on?

there is no such thing as an AJS or Matchless dynamo, they are all the same.
Nor do they "mesh" with the back of the chain case, in fact there should be quite a gap and before you ask nothe oil won't come out.

I was under the impression E3LM dynamo was fitted to a magdyno, hence the M

And also the reason it doesn't fit.

The L means its the longer more powerful 60watt version.

Also... As well as the different drive end castings etc. the AMC dynamo has a tapered armature for the sprocket..

The Magdyno version has a parallel armature for the drive gear...Ian

with a bit of trickery you can fit either of those dynamos to AMC singles.

It depends whether the previous owner was a clever bugger or a numpty.

Yes, it was a clever Dutchman but i also forget where the article is. I managed to squeeze a long one in an early Matchy but I had no movement for chain adjustment. Believe it or not there was a one year only CP box which had a factory cutaway for the long genny but I sold it on.If it's a B52 box it should fit anyway.

There is some difference to the drive end on the dynamos (Plate)
"The constructional difference between the two models is in the
Shape of the drive-end bearing retaining plate:
Model E3L is designed to fit onto the engine crankcase,
And model E3LM to be the upper portion of the "Magdyno"

But it makes no difference when fitted to a Matchless as the case makes no contact with back of the primary case.
