Finally getting down to assembling my M20 after what feels like forever.
Today while assembling the girder fork, it didn't seem to be fitting properly. The spring seems to rub against the steering stem and against the crossmember that holds the speedo bracket.
Am I assembling something wrong? I don't remember rubbing like that. I posted a pic of the fork before the resto and the cable seems to have clearance.

Upon some further tinkering and looking through photos of the breaking down of the bike, it seems as though the spring does retract a bit without the rest of the front tire assembly.
I noticed that the girder links have a more horizontal look to them when the front wheel is on the bike, while the angle changes quite a bit without the wheel.
Am I taking crazy pills or is this correct? My only worry is that the spring was rubbing against my new powder coat and didn't want to damage it.
Brian the spring rubbing on the lower bearing area of the headstock is normal while the bike is jacked up with the front wheel off the ground. Likewise while you are building your forks. I usually place a piece of cardboard between spring and frame to save my paint and remove it when the bike is back on its feet.
As an aside. when the bike is on the floor. I will then lock up the link bolts tight and re-jack it. That way, the spring is clear of the headstock for checking your steering stem bearings for adjustment.......Then re-adjust your links when on the ground again. Ron
