I've just finished re-wiring my WM20 and have come across a problem. My bike has the OFF, L and H switch which I have wired correctly. The problem I've got is that the switch is only capable of joining 2 posts at one time. The OFF position joins the two posts that cater for feeds to the tail lamp and
instrument light (brown and black on post 5) and the pilot lamp (yellow on post 4). In this position, there is no battery feed to either. When the switch is turned to L, posts 3 and 4 are joined. Post 3 houses the main battery feed (red) and feed out to regulator A (blue). This position switches on the pilot lamp but the tail lamp and instrument lamp wires (brown and black are now disconnected. So the tail lamp and instrument lamp can never be on. Turning the light switch to H, joins posts 2 and 3 (main battery feed, regulator A and red out to dipswitch. This position also takes the pilot light out of the circuit; not really a problem as the headlight is on at this point.
How do I get the tail light and instrument light to work without cramming about 4 wires into one post? %%htmlItem_1%%

Reading again, I see you did put the feed to 3,
But why do you need to couple 4 cables together, again?...
You may have a faulty switch..
Post 3 should get power both when On "L" or "H".
The fact that the pilot lamp goes off when the "H" is correct and normal.
We must remember that the system only supplied 40, and later 60W,

Well, according to BSA Service Sheet 808, I've got it wired as it should be.
The posts are numbered anti-clockwise; number 1 is top right. The only difference is that I have no ammeter in the circuit so my red feed to post 3 is direct from the battery positive. I can't see how to get round the fact that only two posts can ever be connected together at once, unless I add a link wire between posts 3 and 5.
Also, I can't make the link on your answer work.
May be it did not work cause I was editing, changing something in my post..

The tail and speedo on post 5 is OK.
May be something is wrong with the switch?..
Anyway, if you try to hook the instrument and tail lights,
Both with the pilot and with the "H", it would mean
That they would be shorten together, and will always be on together,
Both on "L" or "H".
Your wiring seems fine..
I would check the switch.
Post 3 has power all the time. It IS the power post. What I need is for post 5 to have power when the switch is in positions L and H. I think I may just add that link between 3 and 5. That should do the trick, but I would be interested to know either what's wrong or what I've done wrong.

Our posts keep crossing over! The switch looks fine and I can't see that there can be anything other than what you can see. That is a spring-loaded roller that connects two posts together at any one position. All the workings are on show and I have had it apart and cleaned the roller and the posts. I just can't see how that wiring diagram can possibly be right without an additional link wire.
Hmmmm! The WD 4 position switch has the rocker assembly to allow power for the tail light only position. Is perhaps the brass link in the middle of your switch that goes to N06 on the wrong post? There has to be a link to enable the tail/panel light to stay on when you switch from L to H. It's one of those occasions when it's best to sit with switch-battery-test lamp on the kitchen table. Ron
Sorted it! Thanks Ron and Noam. That flat spring blade that bears on the centre of the switch is a wiping contact. I didn't realise that the sprung roller housing was also live when the contact with pin 3 was made. There are actually two spring blades, which you can see in the picture. The shorter, top one, swings round and makes contact with pin 5. All I had to do was remove the nut, turn the top blade over, and refit it such that it contacts pin 5. Job done. Another little problem sorted. Nearly ready for the road!
