Do any one Know were i can get one of those canvas round disc type
that goes around the petrol tank cap on the tank ? i guess its to stop petrol on the paint work or to stop scratching the tank when filling up
iv seen them on various Wd motorcycles bsa norton . Even seen one the weekend on an original police bike (royal enfield ) very nice bike first time iv seen an original police bike totally painted black 1939 at the black country museum 1940's week end

Gary, you have to join the 'Ring-Piece' Club. I have to say that their initiation procedures have always put me off....

Hi M8, never mind the Ring Piece Club, I get fuel running down my tank after I fill up this continues until I have used up some fuel, so any kind of RING could be good, please let me know if you find any, I have the original style fuel cap but I don't know wether it is all there and if a RING should be fitted, good luck with your enquiry and please keep me posted I will do the same if I here anything.

DIY Guide :-) > First just find yourself a suitable piece of correct colour(for you) canvas. Any old stuff will do. Brand new won't look brand new after your first spill so... Mark it with a pair of compasses and cut it with scissors.

This is why I laugh when someone has fuel starvation problems and someone suggests checking the tank cap could be causing a vacuum!

The first one I saw was years ago on Ian Wright's bike. I asked him about it and he pointed me to a WW2 picture of a Norton 16H (from memory). The rider had cut a hole in a rough shaped piece of canvas and placed it round the filler neck as an obvious mop for petrol spills. Ian had tidied up the idea with a nice round piece of canvas, that was cut from an old back pack or something and got his sewing lady to put a blanket stitch round the edge. I copied the idea making me and Ian "Ring Piece Buddies". It's definitely not a BSA feature or WO directive, but it does stop the Ethanol eating or staining your paint. Ron

Lately, I saw a photo (Can't remember where! Normandy photos? )
Of a restored M20 with this ring, but the ring was not blank,
And had the arrow and year printed on it.

Was it just a fake?..

Hi Noam...I think Eric Halberstadt made a few with the 'WD' stencil and date on...

I always fit one to prevent petrol running down the tank when the level is high...Even riding off road (or on a bumpy road) can cause a petrol leak which marks the tank...The 'ring piece' completely solves that problem....Ian

With the marks, I thought that it was an original fit,
And wondered why I did not see more of it.

I thought that the ones who had it (Original photos) must have been in good terms
In some places, and in the army, usually the quartermaster
Is a very important guy to have as a friend..

I usually do not have a leakage from the fuel tank,
Since I cut a good gasket.
I have another "problem"-
If the tank is full and I am driving od the highway,
The fuel flow to the carb is faster than in the city,
And there is not much air in the tank, so I get a fuel starvation,
(The drill in the cap is clear and the gasket not in the way)
In order to prevent it, I open the cap a bit to let air in,
And that is when the mess starts.. Splashes all around.
About leaks from the bottom of the engine-it is another story
especially when leaning on a side stand,
But someone told me that if a BSA does not leak,
It means that it has no oil.. LOL..
