so , had this 1942 WM20 for a few months - starting to get it ready for registration.

the primary chain was tight as a bow.

-but I cant move the gearbox anymore forward - hits the right foot peg;-and ahs about 1/8" to 3/16" left on the engine plate slots

it dosesnt look like the clutch is sitting centrally in the chain cover(ie too far forward)

primary chain has 68 pins (68links?)and 19tooth engine sprocket.and 43 tooth cultch sprocket

m I missing something? -or is my primary chain a link too short ?

You should have 69 links...

It appears you are going to need a half link, another split link and a chain breaker to adjust things a little....

Look for a manufacturers name on the link plates before buying your half link etc....Japanese chains tend to have thicker link plates (and longer pins) than Reynolds or Regina chains so links from the latter two won't fit the Jap chains and the Jap ones are slack in the Reynolds/Regina chains...If you can't find a name verify the plate thickness with the supplier..

You just can't trust these Orientals!

Don't forget to readjust the rear chain after you've finished with the primary...Ian

The number of links is the number of pins-1
So your chain is 67 links (68 pins)
Standard is 69 links ( 70 pins )
Before you do any thing how many teeth on both the primary sprocket & clutch because 69 links is standard but owners oft change the primary sprocket to alter the overall gearing as it is easier to do that change the gearbox sprocket .

- the sprocket on engine and clutch are the std 19 and 43- so looks like I am 2 links short - which makes sense now

another question -

the 3 bolts that hold the primary cover to the crankcase - are these lockwired as standard ?

found one rattling around bottom of primary case ....

Yes, they should be...The heads of the bolts are cross drilled and then the bolts are wired after fitting...Ian
