Burman type and serial nos

Hi Folks
Can anyone let me know the Type and serial nos of the CP Burman gearbox fitted to Matchless WD G3L and when any changes for different contract nos took place?
Many thanks
Paul

Re: Burman type and serial nos

Hi Paul,

If you are looking for a replacement box you ideally want one stamped 8CPBL.. The L stands for Low bottom gear and these were the boxes fitted to all G3L's from 1941 onwards. The G3WO girder fork bike had gearboxes stamped simply 8CPB and did not have the low gear fitted.. However, as far as I am aware any CP box made for AMC will fit. However, you should beware that the mainshaft for boxes fitted to Ariel's were different and cannot be fitted to a Matchless. I am sure someone will be able to post a photo of the different types of mainshaft but I have never got to grips with posting photos on this site. Cheers John

Re: Burman type and serial nos

John, Paul,

Another difference with the 8CPB is that it had no drain plug, just like early Nortons!!

Other differences are gear change pedal and shaft, and grease nipple on top.

But all parts interchange ofcourse.

Cheers,

Lex

Re: Burman type and serial nos

Thanks very much guys. The data base is very useful Lex.
My existing box was I thought numbered 8CPRL9670, but I now look and realise the R is a B with the bottom worn off!
Still looking for a spring box if you know of anyone with one they would sell.
Regards
Paul
