Sorry to post a Goldie question on a M20 forum, but I know there are some really knowledgeable people on here who may be able to help.
I'm trying to time the cams on my (almost) DBD34 Goldie. I'm not convinced that the cams are correctly timed and the marks on the cams and or pinion could be out.
Is there an easy way of checking that the cam timing is correct?
I've not got an issue with the valves hitting the piston but the inlet and the exhaust seem 180 dg out to me as the inlet is still open just before the engine is on TDC on the compression stroke....
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the help (again). Funnily the engine isn't too far from you (its in Gunnislake).
I think I've not allowed for the possibility of the cams being interchangeable depending on engine configuration (touring, clubmans or scrambles).
I need to go back to basics, get the motor to TDC and see where we are. I know that the cams should (roughly be: inlet lobe 20 to the hour and exhaust lobe at 20 past the hour. I also need to check the cams to make sure I have them the correct way around (highest lift being the inlet).
I know that there are five teeth to worry about, one at TDC, two back for the inlet and two forward for the exhaust.
I'm away for a few days, once I'm back I'll let you know the cam numbers etc, and see where we are.
The motor has been apart for some time due to some getting parts made, and others modified, typically I didn't take any photos, cos "how complicated can a single be"!
if I am right goldie cams only have a dot on one and a dash on the other as they are handed ie one is for the exhaust one is for inlet not the same as the m20/b31 these cams have a dot and dash on both cams and are interchangeable with each other
