some info required on my WM20

Hi fellas

I have a barn find which is slowly re-emerging. I hope to get to Normandy but there is a fair way to go.

The bike hasn't any military information with it bar that it came back from Cyprus about 40 years ago and has Khaki green under desert "sand" paint (and real sand)so it points to being in the North African campaign. The frame no. is 34310 and engine no. 29858 - any ideas what regiment it may have been with, or C number, or where I might find this information.

By the way if anyone has a speedo and speedo gearbox for a girder front I'm looking for both.

Thanks
Rick (Exeter)

Re: some info required on my WM20

Rick, regrettably there is no longer any way of telling where the bike was sent, nor to which unit.

The machine which left the factory bearing engine and frame number no.WM20 34310 was despatched under contract C7287 which was the large post-Dunkirk contract for 17000 machines (WM20 25001 - WM20 42000) and I calculate that it would have been numbered C4350902. Delivery commenced in August 1940. I'd put delivery some time in the first half of 1941.

I've attached a picture which includes C4350086 which gives an idea of the original specificatiion (the mottling seems to be damage to the photo or negative, not a disruptive paint scheme).

The British Army of the 1950s remained active in the Mediterranean and sand finish could have been indicative of any number of duties during that period.
