Iron or Alloy head?....I use Champion plugs myself..An L86C for the iron head and an N5C for the alloy one...I've done long and short runs with both types without any problems....Ian ...
You need a cold plug for a hot engine and hot plug for a cold engine. A cold plug has a short insulator to get rid of heat as quick as possible ie a sports motor or one that tends to run hot like a sidevalve. A hot plug has a long insulator to hold on to heat to help burn of oil and or other deposits. Not used that much today unless you have an older motor. Years ago when I ran a Vincent outfit in London I used N8 plugs to stop fouling, but had to remember to change back to N5 plugs if I went on a run as the N8s would overheat.
I think that Champion L86C is the best fit. (C represents a Copper core)
With other sparkplugs, mostly MGK, it seems like the motor is more "choked",
and you cannot "stretch" gears as much as with the "champion".
Currently I use an old Champion L10, the predecessor of the L86C,
I think it is from the 40's, strange looking and short ceramic insulator,
With a nut to fasten the HT lead by hand.
it works great.
I use the NGK B6HS cooler,I do not like using plugs on the hot side, can burn a hole in piston etc, bike runs perfectly on the B6HS,iron head has the short reach plug H not E
