Just spotted this in a WW2 RAF publication.

In the section "overall dimensions" it says the height is 3'10 1/2" and then (Cut down) 3' 3 3/4".

Any ideas?

Rob it also states a folding screen, which I know there are pictures of on pre war examples. Without actually taking a chain saw to it.... If you remove the spare wheel and drop the side car seat into the foot well and tip or remove some handles, you would be at the max hight of the handlebar and save about that 6 3/4" in height. Ron

It would take two solos to transport three men with a Bren and ammunition with less comfort and reduced cross-country ability in some situations. I'd guess that they'd need a gallon every thirty miles too.

Yes and although the Jeep replaced the Big4 and could carry four men and equipment and probably marginally more comfortably, you'd be lucky to get 15mpg.

Perhaps these data sheets weren't all that accurate, were the M20 and 16H outfits really this wide?

I'd say that is spot on Rob. I can't measure my 16H as I've just sold the side car from it. But My Big4 is about 5' 7 1/2" from outside of kick-start to side car central wheel nut. It's surprising how much room they take up. It's one reason I sold my 16H chair.
I put 6'6" double doors in the end of my new workshop extension to be sure I can get an outfit through. Even that's a bit tight. Ron

I think its about right for the big4 and possibly the 16H, but my BSA M20 outfit with the correct Swallow chassis is a lot narrower than that.

OK Rob. The Norton chassis do have the external tubing over the wheel which will make a slight difference. But other than that I would expect them to be the same. I suppose you could squeeze the chair nearer the bike for less left leg room. The furthest point outwards on the right is the kick starter and I found you can't get a straight measure....having to do it in stages. Try it! Ron

I just saw that they give the same 5' 6 1/2" for the Big4 which is about right and You could be correct because the B4 is certainly wider. Ron

I assumed the right hand end of the handlebar was the furthest bit in that direction, its a bit difficult to be accurate with my outfit's at the moment as the are only partly together.

The big 4 sheet states as well as wheel base the "track", I assume this is the width between the centre line of the bike wheels and the sidecar wheel, pity it doesn't list this for the other two.

I notice there is also no mention of 18inch rims on the 16H and M20.

I assumed the same thing Rob. But as I was measuring I noticed that the kicker sticks out a bit further. I did measure my 16H at one time but I didn't right it down. Ron
