Evening

I need an early style crankcase protector to complete my restoration, one of the Indian companies advertises these on eBay but I will not buy from these people due to generally reported poor quality.

Does anyone know someone who can fabricate one.

I got one of Ian a couple of years ago. A cracking job it was I saw one on Ebay the other day, the welding looked rubbish and it had what looked like a bracket for a U clamp on the front, which is not needed.

Andrew, I have just taken delivery of a pair of mudguards and rear stand, made in India for my WNG, and the quality is excellent, perfict fit and much better than a pair of british made ones for my WM20 from a well known supplier in Suffolk!

This the the bash plate that I was on about earlier, it doesn't look very good, and shouldn't have the bracket on the front. It seems expensive as well.

There are two versions of this early sumpguard...One had the bracket as fitted to the Indian one (plus a couple of spacers and a 'U' clamp not included)...The other didn't.

That isn't the main issue though...There is no flexibility in the positioning of the mounting brackets. They must be exactly right or the guard won't fit...

The keyhole slots must also be correct to fit the (two sizes) of shouldered mounting nuts.

I made the jig that my guards are welded up on and they are guaranteed to fit in every respect, including the keyhole slot sizes. It's entirely possible the Indian ones aren't so accurate...Plus mine are cheaper as well..I don't know how I do it for the money... ...Ian

I don't have the information relating to the date of any change...I copied an original one I borrowed that didn't have the clamp..

'More complicated' frequently means earlier as things tended to be simplified as time went on, not made more complicated....

The M20 was accepted for service in 1937 and the early pattern guards were used until late 43 if my memory is correct....

As I have discovered to my cost with battery cases it doesn't pay to make multiple versions..It just makes the manufacture and stocking of parts more complicated and the numbers, in the case of the sumpguard, are too low too warrant it....

With all the additional components it would also make it considerably more expensive....Ian

The problem with the Indian ones is the cost of the postage, in some cases it is nearly the cost of the item itself. So if they don't fit properly unless you can tweak the fitting yourself you invariably have to send it back which can be expensive. The few parts I make myself are all laser cut from an original component so each one is a guaranteed fit. I notice with Indian components if they don't fit they tend to give a partial refund if the fit isn't perfect , which is ok if you don't have to remove brackets and re weld them back on, but if you have to you may as well have tried to make the item yourself. I must say there is nothing more irritating than to go to great trouble to get a load of parts made only to have the Indians undercut you on price a week later, as you can't convince your customers that yours are an accurate fit when there is the same item on eBay at half the price! Sometimes it can deter you from getting parts made which means that the only ones available are a possibly poor fitting Indian component!

Hi Dave...Google 'Cellulitis'...Not recommended at all..In a mild form (which I currently have) it's painful and stops me walking as it in my leg...In more serious cases you can be very quickly hospitalized and in very serious cases it can kill you...

Fortunately I'm not in the latter category at the moment.. ....Ian
