I have /am fitting a set of girder forks to my m20 replacing the set of bsa c12 forks and wheel? I have hit a problem not sure if I have missed a step ? the spring is rubbing against the front frame is there a adjustment you can do to move the forks away from the frame I am waiting for a new inner tube so it is still off the ground

Re: girder forks

The fork spring does rub on the headstock until some weight is put on them, this is normal

Re: girder forks

Adding to what Dave said.. you can drop the front stand down to keep weight on the spring to avoid scraping paint off your headstock.

Re: girder forks

I place a piece of cardboard behind the spring to save the paint, until the weight is on the forks. To adjust the headstock bearings, I lock up the spindle bolts before jacking up the bike. This keeps the spring away from the frame and helps determine any movement at headstock bearings. Ron

Re: girder forks

Or just tighten up your damper.

Re: girder forks

Yes Douglas, but by locking up all the spindle bolts you eliminate all movement of the spindles so that any play can only then be at the steering stem.
