Re: how to remove gearbox?

I presume you are talking about an M20? First you have to remove the whole primary drive:- outer case, both chains, clutch, crank shaft sprocket and cush drive, and inner case, clutch cable. The two bolts through the bottom of gear box with chain adjuster. If you slacken the long stud that goes through the rear of the gear box plates and the ones on the saddle tube, you can probably lever the box up and out. It's then a bit of a wiggle past the oil tank. Ron

Re: how to remove gearbox?

Unless your doing some welding, everything can be done insitu. I can't stand fiddling about with engine plates and such.

Re: how to remove gearbox?

im going to replace a broken kickstart spring..

Re: how to remove gearbox?

To late now Hans, but you don't need to remove the primary side for this. Just the gearbox kick start outer case. Still a bit fiddly with the nuts behind the case but better than removing the whole box. Ron

Re: how to remove gearbox?

Should have asked first Hans!

Re: how to remove gearbox?

Have a look at the Technical Info pages on the website; there is a useful modification to facilitate removal and re-installation of the outer cover

I have changed the cork behind the clutch so most of the primary was already of.

Re: how to remove gearbox?

I don't know of one. But I have seen Henk do it in a field one day with only tools he was carrying. He only managed to get three of the four back that day though. Did you check Han's tips? http://www.wdbsa.nl/download/Gearbox%20work.pdf

Re: how to remove gearbox?

It's a very simple modification, only requiring a small lathe, some 1/4" rod and a ratchet spanner. Replace the 4 bolts with the studs:
%%htmlItem_1%%

%%htmlItem_2%%
The reduced end facilitates putting the nut on and the ratchet spanner let you work in the confined space

Re: how to remove gearbox?

I just went to the nuts & bolt shop and purchased some threaded headless 1/4 studs, but they are not studs, just bolts without heads. They work great.

Re: how to remove gearbox?

Thanks for all the good tips Gentlemen!
I will do the modifications you did,Hans and Bryce
