Hi I have a speedo gear drive for my 1942 bsa m20 and I was wondering if anyone knows the correct ratio for the speedometer. Like 2:1 3:1 and so on. I can't afford an original Smith right now sonim trying to get a replica for now. Thank You
Hi,I think you need a 2-1 ratio that turns clock wise as you look at it in the
fitted position, that is the trouble with all the others. The WM20 gearbox is mounted on the left side front wheel, most others are right side rear wheel mounted.I cant be sure if any other fitment will do the job,Indian replicas
look cheap enough, gearbox and cable for a tenner. It may end in tears going down
this route, and wasted money.Ask in the parts wanted department, you never know.
Cheers Rick
I had this very same problem and ended up buying a NOS item off a forum member. At the moment I still have the dodgy original unit fitted and I've just taken my inner cable out to save my speedo from damage.
In reality I know that good progress is 50mph, cruising easily is 40mph and easing off a touch is 30 mph . I'll save my new speedo drive for special occasions!
