I'd like to get a view of what are the current values of two military bikes which I am not totally familiar with..Both are in good restored, running condition...
Bonhams have just sold a 741 at Stafford on Sunday and it fetched £11500 with the commission. They did state it had a machine gun with it but it was not on the bike during viewing.
Pre-war OHV Nortons in decent condition are now edging up towards £10,000 and seem to be dragging the rest along. Civilian 16Hs can fetch £7000 or so.
It's a bit odd with the WD16Hs, doggy projects are fetching up to about £4000 but I don't have the impression that good restored examples are selling for much more than about £5000. Mind you, good ones don't come up very often.
To my mind, top money should be dependent on all the details being correct, and they mostly aren't.
The ubiquitous M20 and glamorous G3L seem to be more sought-after as military motorcycles which means that the Norton's comparative scarcity is not really reflected in higher prices and they're not immensely popular amongst fans of a marque that majored on sporting success.
A nice 741 restored to proper military spec with all the correct parts are up to £1400. Tim just paid £8000 for a fairly complete restoration project which will be on my bench after Christmas. Much rarer than a WLA but not as powerful. And despite the usually seen wailing siren and baseball bat......Never used by the US Army. Ron
From what I've seen 16h's tend to go for about £1000 more than an equivalent WM20.
I don't know about the 741's except I know their expensive now and that you couldn't give them away 40 years ago!
with the rocketing prices of civilian chiefs and scouts plus the rarity of them coming up for sale in Europe the 741B's can only go up in value as they are the only Indian in reach of most peoples pocket at the moment.
