Kickstart Spring Repair : Slightly Off topic

Has anyone tried to weld the kickstarter spring of a WD G3L. I have an AJS with a similar gearbox. the spring broke in the middle. Can I bronze weld it and fix it back? or replace the spring?

Warm Regards
Neil

Re: Kickstart Spring Repair : Slightly Off topic

Hi Neill,

I never tried to weld a spring,
But as it is a flexible carbon metal,
and from the nature of its work it moves and flexes all the time,
Even if it will appear to hold, it would probably be useless.
It should probably break within the few first kicks.
If soldered, the metal will not be fused together,
And the 2 ends will only be "Glued" next to each other
By the welding material.

Noam.

Welding will surely take the temper out of the spring too, making it soft and rather un-springlike. Not really an option.

Are these different from pattern ones? The one I broke had thinner wire, 1/8" and one turn less.

These are coiled flat strip, not wire ones as on the BSA. They are all CP type ones, they are NOS and have been wrapped with wire as they originally were, so they didn't take up as much space. They are all the same width apart from one which is slightly wider and I'm not sure which model that is off. They are £10 each including the postage to the UK and just a little bit more for abroad.

Hey Dave, the wider one (about 3/8") is the '48 on CP/GB AMC Ariel type.
Cheers, Mick.

Thanks for letting me know, will it fit into the CP box as it looks like it may last a little longer than the thinner ones
