I had no problems mounting a NOS kickstart spring, until it broke
So I tried a new one; can anybody tell me the trick to do this ?
I think I tried everything but to no avail
I always remember John Budgens (Ariel) reply when I asked, how the hell do you fit a rear stand spring to a W/NG? He said "it's easy, I just go out and leave it to big Dave". I managed to do my W/NG with a larged greased screwdiver! But I have found it impossible on an M20 without a spring expander tool.
There are kick start springs that look very much like an M20 spring but are slightly smaller then the original spring. I had one of these and they just don't fit, even when using a quite a lot of force. You might had a wrong one as the original kick start spring is quite easy to fit.
I finally succeeded, but it was blood, toil, sweat and tears
But I think I have an idea for a tool to make things doable for roadside repair
I welded a short piece of steel tubing about 24.8mm round, fitting into the hollow part of the kickstarter quadrant on a piece of steel strip:
Then I pull up the spring and fit the hook on the quadrant. Now you can wiggle the quadrant into the bush, while turning the quadrant (am I a bit clear ... )
I compared a replica spring with the dimensions stated in the "Green Book":
length 1 1/32" (26,2mm), replica 1" (25,4mm)
inside diameter 2 1/4" (57,15mm) replica 2 5/16" (58,5mm)
The wire diameter of the replica is 3,8mm.
What are the dimensions according to you
