when in the army in the 60s there was a tin of stew in the ration packs it was very nice I wonder if this was the same recipe as the maconochies stew also I remember these blocks of dried compressed beef which you put in hot water and it would expand to a fair size lump of beef we used to chew the block unboiled while driving along
