I saw one interesting article about setting the timing on Matchless and it indeed helped me a lot.

Days back when I was cleaning my cylinder head I saw the two valve buttons were not similar. one was slightly bigger than the counterpart.

1. What will happen if I run the bike without the valve caps?
2. Will there be any adverse effects if the size 2 valve caps don't match?

John I think the hardened caps were simply to protect the ends of the softer valves. More modern valves will not have this problem. Then it doesn't matter if you miss match them or leave them off as long as you can maintain the correct valve clearance. Ron
