It's so interesting...the naming of bikes that is.........they fitted their own number plates but kept "Dorothy" on there.....I think the wartime naming of bikes was perhaps far more common than we think........
Our Ariel is called "Nancy"........cos when we found her in bits, the name was carved into the bakelite steering damper...........so Nancy she remains to this day........
As for the Norton, Mrs M has named her "Daphne"......probably not too far from accuracy for the era.........
I think I have done a couple of posts with captured/left behind bikes, one fairly recently. I trawl the net for period military motorcycle photographs and sometimes captured bikes turn up, especially French, Dutch & Berlgian as these were more readily available.
The first picture is an FN T3 Tricar, ex Belgian Army.
The second picture are two Model 340B Indians, ex French Army.
The third picture are two Nortons 16H, ex BEF.
The fourth picture is a Royal Enfield Model J, ex civilian.
The last two pictures are two Saroleas 600, ex Belgian Army. The soldier on the pillion seat is a Belgian POW.
For anyone who's interested in the motorcycles of the Belgian Army, have a look at this thread that I made on another forum.
