8" Blackout Mask

I've been offered this 8" blackout mask..

Was wondering when these masks were used? Was it before, after or at the same time with the flat glasses?

Are these masks proper for the DU142 headlamp?

Re: 8" Blackout Mask

Kostas I'm quite sure these Lucas Maxlites are civilian. But almost the same as the WD version. I used one here on my WD/L's DU142 and by removing the Lucas plate and filling the recess it looks just like WD. Mine has the little round window also. I need another one if you get the chance to buy two. Ron

Re: 8" Blackout Mask

As far as I can tell from photographic evidence, the steel masks were not being factory fitted at the end of Norton contract C7353 (Frame no. W43000, early 1941). The 8" mask does seem to have been fitted to C10217 (W45001 - W50000 - mid 1941) and the 6" lamp appeared on C11082 (1942).

They were retro-fitted in place of the paper cut-out mask once they became available. I've seen correspondence in the motorcycling press where civilians were complaining that they were being fined for improper masks and the army were still using paper, so the changeover did not happen at once.
