I've currently got my M20 insured with Footman James, I used to have a few of my other unregisterd project bikes insured there too but they now insist on registration.

I just phoned Carol Nash, they will insure a bike on the frame number but only for 30 days, just long enough to go through the registration process I assume.

My problem is the Welbike, it seems there was an option for some kind of "storage" policy but that won't cover the Welbike at shows, either to ride around the arena or third party, in case some horrible child hurts itself climbing on it.

Theoretically the Welbike can't be MOT'd in the UK because it has no front suspension and only one brake and therefore it can't be registered.

And another thing, in order to get an agreed value I'm being asked that the M20 be inspected, who am I supposed to take it too?

Any suggestions?

Hi Rob...Welbikes...don't know anything about them..I'd sell it and put the money into a proper bike..I'm suspicious of any bike that needs to be thrown out of a plane before you can use it and that you could hurt yourself tripping over....Regarding a valuation for your M20 these can be done by a motorcycle shop with relevant experience of old bikes and are accepted by insurance companies...(it's a bit like getting a quote for repairs after an accident.) I did one for a bloke who needed to get his bike valued as part of a divorce settlement...He turned out to be a numpty as he said he thought I'd 'undervalued' it....Think about it...half the value to the ex... ...Ian

It's such a shame things have gone this far nowadays. In the old days, we used to have these things called 'Accidents'. If someone's kid was stupid enough to trip over your Welbike, it was their own daft fault! Their Dad would clip them around the ear, appologise to the owner and everyone would get on with their lives.

My insurance broker is "Premium Choice" (insurance with KGM) Formerly "Roadsure" and various other names but originally "AC Miles" who were the prevalent insurance company with the MVCG/MVT for years. My Flea/ML/ Welbike are all insured by frame number and have been for years. Ron

i'm with carole nash, and have several bikes on an adft basis, all reg on frame numbers only..its never been an issue, and i've even insured, on the same policy a foreign ( irish ) registered bike.

Hi Rob, as a Welbike is pre-1960 it doesn't need an MOT so I see no reason why you can't get a registration on it the same way as any other WD bike..?

Rob, Im also insured with Footman James and they insured my M20 for 8 months on its frame number alone. If I recall correctly they have a policy just for this cover so may be worth checking again.

You dont need an mot for first reg thats 100% i have just done a 1949 matchless .Dont quote me on this but i think if you are a mvt member you are covered by their insurance at shows.

yes Rob your interpretation is correct MOT is required for first registration
probably as a second "proof" that the bike actualy exists the first proof being the dating certificate for which you have to supply photo's
ergo no inspection by the DVLA

I was with Footman James until they wanted to charge me an extra fee for paying with my debit card...thought that was extracting the michael...now I am insured with Peter James Insurance.....same man who founded Footman James...guess what no charge for debit card + £50 cheaper too !!!

Its odd that one tax office wanted to see an MOT and the other one didn't, were you both reclaiming an original number or asking for an age related number?

Just after an age related number Rob.....bike was originally purchased by previous owner in Malaya in the 60's when he was working there he then brought it back to the UK in the 80's & it stayed in his garage untouched until I got my mits on it late last year

This is getting very confusing how come i have rebuilt a 1949 matchless gone down to the dvla office and three days later got a reg number and tax disk no mot or inspection and it was never registered in this country because i bought it from holland in bits i didnt tell dvla that though.

I just insured my M20 this month with Bikesure/Adrian Flux. I got a quote from Footman James at just over £150. Quote from AF was £96. I phoned them back a few days later to confirm I wanted it and they were able to offer me an alternative quote of £76, inclusive of agreed value. All I needed to do was email them 3 recent photos, including one showing the reg. plate. Am I smiling or am I smiling?

Definately no mot needed, just done the reg on my 58 TRIBSA frame was a imported super rocket from the states,All I needed was a nova vat number and insurance I also had bike inspected at my local museum as they are registered with DVLA frame & engine rubbings and a dating letter from BSA club two weeks later I have my age related number.. Dave..

I didn't need an mot on the flea, just a dating letter with rubbings and just filled in the registration form!

matters & the DVLA have moved on
no MOT now required just supply MOT exempt by age form which is downloadable from DVLA
Insurance cover notes will only be issued for a period of a month although your insurance will be for 12 months.
ergo you have a month (can be extended with issue of further covernote) in which to apply for age related number
Peter James insurance is still the best in many respects , cheaper with same level of cover as others but more importantly the staff at Peter James understand & know what they are talking about , same cannot be said for Footman James & other well known insurers

Just tried Peter James and they have given me insurance quote of £83.25
Also it is underwritten by Equity Star which is whom Swinton used.
So now insured and pleased with deal.
