I was thinking of getting a replacement for my saddle as my original Terry saddle has the purple paint on it from whoever painted the bike in the 60's, after just seeing this ebay item, 121058280655 I think its going to the local cobblers to get re-stitched and see if he can buff the paint off.
Henk showed a NOS a while ago, perhaps he wants to do business??
Otherwise you can contact Frederik and Francois van Genechten on www.ffmotoronderdelen.be. They have an old specialist who makes new covers tailormade on your saddle.
I want to see my local cobbler first as it would be nice to get the original Terry's saddle restored if possible.
I originally thought that this saddle wasn't original anyway as I have a slightly different saddle frame to the majority I've seen on the web with a solid metal front(not sprung), I also thought all the BSA saddles were Lycette?
I've never seen one like that before.
Does it have anything stamped on main saddle frame?
There are at least 3 different "Terry" badges, which one is on your cover?
Can you post or send me pictures of the rest of your saddle please, especially the front mount?
Can you please measure your saddle frame for me? (plan view)
Overall length from snout to centre of back:
Overall width at rear:
This is the front mounts (the 2 triangular plates with the 3 holes):
The saddle was originally assembled as shown below, but the nose of the saddle was to far back from the tank and forced the springs back to far, therefore I think the nose mounting brackets should be rotated 90 degrees and the tank sit further forward and a little higher.
Those 2 triangular mountings with the 3 holes look much like the ones fitted between the top of the two rear saddle springs and the saddle frame on a later WD type (standard) saddle.
So I don't think they originally were fitted to your saddle. Regards, Michiel
They are the mounts for the springs to space them further forward so maybe your saddle may be wrong as they would be needed to keep the springs vertical, if you don't need them the saddle frame you have must be too short
Have you got a picture of how the saddle springs were mounted with these brackets please?
My bike is 1945/44 (still awaiting BSAorg to confirm after sending in the frame and engine rubbings), so as it was one of the last WM's would they of prototyped this saddle?
I think the saddle must of been changed after seeing Henks photos of the 2 types of saddle.
My sprtings have ears on them to mount diret to the back of the saddle so I think I need a new saddle, frame and springs.
Any recommendations?
It would appear that your saddle is a hybrid comprised of a Mansfield frame (large type, albeit incomplete), fitted with a Terry cover (late war "Universal" type, or possibly post war type with aluminium badge).
It also appears to me, if you rig up some front mounts and re-arrange the spring mounts on your Mansfield frame, then refit Terry cover, you will have a perfectly legitimate late-war/post-war WD saddle.
Based on data harvested from this forum 2009.
At that time Ian Wright believed he had a large type Mansfield in his loft, perhaps Ian can post pictures of the front mount and spring mounts?
Whereby you could make your Mansfield 100% correct.
