I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?
Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Nor me! Unless that is some sort of spoke key at the end? No scale for the size of it. I've asked the seller if he knows. Ron

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Yes Ron, I think you may be right,a spoke key, with tyre lever on the opposite end? Looks a bit short though.Mick.

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Like Ron says there is nothing to scale it by. However, if it was a spoke tool the flat end could also be used as nipples are slotted for a screwdriver as well having the square section...Ian

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

I've been watching this and I'm not going to say what it is until the auctions over. There's no chance of getting anything cheap when it gets posted here, it's already at too much money for what it is

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

This is the sellers reply.

Hi Ron,
Sorry I do not have a clue. Some years ago I purchased approx 2 tons of ex WD bike parts and there was a tray of these with other BSA & Triumph tools. thought I would list and see if anyone knew. I have had a number of bids so someone must know something.

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

I thought that everyone had one of these ?

Here's a clue to scale :-

I do use mine but I'm not completely sure about the reason for the unusual form and why the jaw is so crude.

I think that the seller has dozens of them. He's been punting them out for years. It could be used on an M20 but may not be necessary.

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Is it part of the Norton toolkit?

Grrrrrrrr Rik....! The price will go through the roof now

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Are you after it ? I'm sure there will be another one along soon. I don't know why this one's gone so high as they don't usually.

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Yes Rik, would have been nice to add to the tool roll. I've got most items now except the pressed steel spanners and this spanner. All items that people would throw away. This one went for £17.20 which is too much for what it is

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

The eventual buyer looks to have mainly bid on eBay Germany...Is it someone who reads this forum ? If so, I hope they'll own up.

If there aren't any more in the world, then I'm sure that someone like Jan could soon start production....

It also fits the dynamo clamping band screw. It was a late-war addition so presumably introduced to deal with an access problem. I have no idea why the jaw has a squared-off form to deal with a hex-head fastener.

We had a thread dealing with W/NG toolkits which show that the Ariel tool didn't have the odd offset so maybe this one is specific Norton ? Mine is in the tool roll hiding behind the magneto spanner.

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Well the good news is he sent me a second chance offer and my bid was no where near the final auction price, so he must have had a few kicking around
I just need the small stamped out spanners now. Oh I forgot about the box spanners as well

Good point Ian, you could have them made pitted, covered in scale as they came out of the forge but at least they'd be shiny.

Could you use them on an M20 or does the M20's magneto retaining strap preclude that ?

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

Well I've already got stainless magneto straps so it would work quite well..Ian

Re: I have never seen such a tool, anybody any idea?

May I point out that they are dynamo strap tools, not magneto strap tools
