I'm new here so please forgive me if this has been discussed already, but I couldn't find the information in the forum search I did.
I was wondering if anyone could confirm that welbikes ALL had an engine serial number starting with XXE and that an XX serial number prefix always denotes a civilian production? Does the E in the XXE prefix stand for Excelsior?
Hello Francois. That indeed is about the size of it. All the Welbike engines were prefixed XXE. Presumably the 'E' was for Excelsior. There are all sorts of numbers attached to Villiers JDL engines but predominately XXA was used. again presumably 'A' for Autocycle. The six prototype Welbikes produced before production started might have had something different of course? The best information so far is in a book called 'From Welbike to Corgi' by Peter Miller ISBN 0 9530683 1 5. Or email me and I'll put you in touch with the author. Ron
