Here a photo of an Ariel W/NG pannier bag found recently in Normandy. Was the tank number officially added to the bag or was this done by a soldier who didn't want have his pannier bags stolen? Or some thing else?

I have a pair with a Matchless C number on the inside, and have seen it on others aswell, quite a common thing, to stop pilfering!

Never seen it on the outside though!

back in the late '80s, when I bought my first M20 from "British Only" here in Michigan, he had a stack of original pannier bags, and almost all of them had the postwar numbers stenciled on the outside-numbers like "09YD84" or something similar. I grabbed the only two sets that did not have numbers on them.
