Iv just heard that independent archeologists in Rangoon have said there are no buried Spitfires at the three sites they have assessed.

Re: Burma Spitfires

hello all
I would have thought the way everything was documented they could not even bury one never name twenty .
Not far from where I live is a crashed b17 and all sorts can be found out about it from a serial number on the remains of say an oleo leg
A few years ago there was a programme on tv about some b17s left on a glacier a team went and got one going and were about to take off when a generator in the tail fell over caught fire and destroyed it.
There are also some liberators under a glacier in Greenland I think.
That's my theory anyway

Re: Burma Spitfires

I saw that program, it was heartbreaking to see it go up in flames. If I remember correctly it was a B29 Superfortress

Re: Burma Spitfires

Charlie,
I remember that program well about the b17 on the glacier, dont think its ever been shown again. He took new engines out and fitted them wanting to fly it out before the winter set in. He overworked himself got the engines running but ran out of time and had to leave it as the winter came. Wonder what ever happened to it or the guy? As you say it was a few years ago when it shown on tv.

Re: Burma Spitfires

Well, I think that there is a spitfire buried in my garden, so if anyone would like to bring a spade they can search to their hearts content, I think its in the top bit where there are lots of brambles. When they have finished I can put a new shed up.

Re: Burma Spitfires

The crates that Spitfires came in were about 12 cubic meters.
So 20 of them would need a hole 240 cubic meters,
So unless they put them down a mine shaft they could not be easily burried and if burried it would have been most obvious where they were.
