Threaded bung in engine cover

Having timed my bike the other day I wondered if the chaincase-style bung that I've seen in some covers is an original thing or something added later to aid setting the timing? All I know is that it would have kept my engine cleaner.

Re: Threaded bung in engine cover

Hi, it was actually an earlier thing, I don't understand why they never carried on fitting it, it certainly made for easier timing. The later cover can be modified to fit one, they all continued to have the reinforced part in the casting to take the thread.

I don't like those covers myself..Unfortunately the hole isn't big enough to actually remove the gear, so you don't get the opportunity to check the positioning of the mag within the oilseal or the condition of the seal..Also you can't get at the gear teeth should you want to 'wedge' them whilst tightening the nut....All a bit too restrictive for my liking..Ian
