Ammeter check up

I found this Ammeter and want to know how to check to see if it's working properly.
don't want to pull the on in my headlamp shell as yet.

Some wire, a 6 volt bulb and a battery it all you need.

is there a polarity on this thing? I guess with the light bulb lit the ammeter will read as a discharge.

hi eric, for what you are doing no,if you wire it the wrong way it will show a charge.
that i presume is all you need to know ,if it is working.
never connect an ammeter across a power supply as it will fry ie one to poitive one to negative.
looks a good original one that,good luck

It looks as if it'll need a good clean. The CZ27 is quite straightforward to dismantle by easing back the tangs. The only fiddly bit is guiding the needle through the slot in the dial.

Yours looks to be a later war version. The date should be visible stamped on the rear housing. - this one is 11/39 and still has the mica window used for illumination from the headlamp bulb on pre-war models.
