Anything else is less..or more..

I just registered for the HMVF forum as I plan to put some 2014 info. on there when we get nearer to the time. Usual thing I find with many forums though..too much unneccessary registration and the use of passwords needed to access the forum...(and the use of 'Posting Ranks'...what's that about?..are we 10 year olds?)
Too much advertising and clutter on the site that make it irritating to navigate and the pointless listing of vehicles owned by contributors on every post.(am I supposed to be impressed?) And finally, when I completed my 'introduction' post and wanted to post it, the website decided it wasn't going to respond...F**K!
This site is so much better in nearly every area than most other forums I visit, as it embodies my belief that simple design is a virtue and that open access should be exactly that..and the contributors here seem happy enough to engage each other in a 'bullshit free' environment..Long may it prosper...Ian (Field Marshall..Lots and lots of bikes).. ..

"Field Marshall", I suspected you were a closet tractor fan when you bought that Harley

And I agree this is the easiest friendliest forum I've encountered. Rob.

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Yes, you are right Ian, The Norton Owners club forum is very annoying. You write a response and post it, only to be greeted with an error message. Then find everything you've written has vanished..! Or you go back and re-post, and it's posted it twice now. There's no edit or delete options, so your blunderings are there for all to see. It doesn't make good reading.

This forum has camaraderie and banter, and of course, useful info

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Just like the "removal of traffic lights" experiments, there's a good argument for giving adults some respect & letting us use our brains, we behave better in that environment.
A junction near me regularly looses its traffic lights due to a fault & everyone slows down & enjoys their new found freedom.

Put a "post counter" next to a persons name & some people will post for no other reason than to increase their post count.

Those lists of machines under the members names are meaningless aswell as you say, im sure most are genuine but you might aswell list what's in your fridge.

bantam (small eggs)
Rocket x 3 (lettuce)
Fire bird (cooked chicken)
Scrambler (brocken eggs)
Clubman (sandwich)
Wasp (after the sandwich)

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

I don't know why the HMVF site is so secure? It took me years to be bothered registering, even though the administrator is a personal friend. Also why everyone needs a nick name? It sometimes takes ages to work out who you're talking too, I'm one of the few who just uses his own name. Got nothing to hide......I see I'm now staff sergeant Ron Pier.

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Couldn't agree more Ian, well said that man! This forum is by far the easiest to use and also the most friendly, least pretentious and most usefull I've come across. I also like the fact that is doesn't seem to matter what you've got, Norton, BSA, Matchless, Enfield or whatever, everyone seems very keen to help out and muck in together. Long may it continue!

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Yes, this is the best bike forum out there, thanks entirely to the good humor and generosity of the members. I won't embarrass you chaps by listing your names, but I appreciate your depth of knowledge and willingness to help!

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

HMVF irritates me a bit, to be honest, and it is a bit over-officious. This might be something to do with it being largely populated by post-WW2 enthusiasts - many of them really have something to prove, and I'm not sure what. The chaps involved with old British stuff are generally not on the macho trip.

The chief moderator there is an Essex pit-bull. He banned me once for a sarky comment which has never happened on any other forum.

All too much of a personal fiefdom with too many egos, I suspect.

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Yes, indeed, ours is a great site. Only small problem is the search function; very basic, but there's always help at hand from the specialists

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

I like the forum format on HMVF, much more easy to find info and 'old topics' than having to wade through back page after back page as you have to do on here. As said above the search format on here is only of limited help, but the folks on here are 'spot on'. Regular bunch of twots (for lack of another word)over on the other site. It started out much better, and although still better than some other forums that will remain nameless, it has degraded and some of the very well informed helpful members seem to be conspicuous by their absence these days. I know some of the rules they have are to protect the site from copyright claims etc, and I undertsand that, but the site admin are OTT and (allegedly)just a bit ignorant with it. As Jack, the site owner, is a friend of Rons I wont pass comment on my dealings with him! I will still continue to use it, but only when I really have to. Which is less and less these days given that I have discovered this forum.

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Don't go to any other forum, Ian.
We want you here.

Noam.

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Jack might be a friend, but he'll be the first to tell you that I'll always tell him he's a twat if the occasion occurs. He's definitely not without his faults! But who of us is? The test of a true friendship is standing by your friends despite their faults and hopefully they stand by you!
I always liken it to people who complain about TV and radio programs that they dislike....just use the 'OFF'
button.

If sarcasm was a reason to be banned, there'd be none of us left here

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

I love this forum as much for the info as the camaraderie. Everybody does a bit of leg pulling without any offense and you learn something new (whether you want to or not) every time you come here. I use a nick-name because it is a habit I got into as a child. With a Name like Smith it was obvious that I was a 'Smudger' then Smutty, Smurf, Santa and finally Ewok, being elevated to the peerage for my contribution to creative accountancy.

I used to be on another site for 'custom bikes' and finally left because of the back-biting and overt racism etc. It was a shame because at the beginning it was a lively, funny and worthwhile site.

Long may this site prosper....

Spambotting ?

At first I thought somebody posted a cynical spoof reply on the forum to this thread, but now I see several more piles of crap being posted- a result of "spambots" or a mere coincidence?

Re: Anything else is less..or more..

Most of it is true (apart from the knighthood) the Custom site degenerated from a lively, funny website to a festering pile of dung in less than a year after the original editor left and a new one took over the site. I only wish I was joking as lot of good friends left and I lost touch with them....
