M21 Piston orientation

Can anyone advise if there is a right and wrong way of orientating the piston on my M21. Does one side have to face the exhaust as in ohv engines. Just there does not seem to be any obvious marks identifying orientation on the +60 that I am about to fit. Hate to make a schoolboy error this far into rebuild. Many thanks Steve

Re: M21 Piston orientation

Is it a split skirt type? If it is, the split must face the thrust side of the piston, ie the front of the engine, if it is not a split skirt type it can go either way. What make of piston is it? If it came in a plain white box with a small Union Jack on it, the best place to fit this type of piston would be in the bin!!!

Re: M21 Piston orientation

Thanks Dave, It is an original BSA one supplied by Les at Russell Motors has no skirt so will fit creatively. The crank bearing is from M.E.S.S. such provenance. Best Regards Steve.

Re: M21 Piston orientation

I thought Les ran out of NOS pistons some time ago, or is there a special handshake involved?!!!

Cheers Pat
