Red Petrol Caps

I'm new to all this WD bike business and my G3 will be my first Military vehicle, though hopefully not my last. The restoration is about finished now and I've been told by a nosey friend that I should really have painted the petrol cap red and the oil cap yellow as this was standard practice in the British Army, is this true? I seem to remember something along these lines, but was this done and if so, when did they start doing it?

Re: Red Petrol Caps

The painting of fuel and oil caps was VERY post War,1946 onwards, not to say MPs didnt do it war time as they were always flashing up there bikes,Andrew.h

Re: Red Petrol Caps

I thought as much, thanks for the info Andrew.

Re: Red Petrol Caps

What about OMD 330 stencilled on the oil tank? From what I can find out, this seems to be a post war habbit, true or false?

Re: Red Petrol Caps

That's true Bill...OMD 330 was the post war oil code that replaced the wartime codes. Oil codes were not usually applied during the war..Ian
