That is a nice picture! I just got my Bombay Bloomers on in readiness to give mine a run after rebuilding the engine with high lift cams and all.
Only to find, that the dynamo isn't charging and the gearbox is spewing grease from the drive end bearing.....Bugger! One step forward and two steps back Ron
I don't know if it's possible to assemble the headlamp upside down without intending to. I'd suspect that the wrong half of the reflector was painted. However, it was quite often wrong. My informal survey of manilla masks with the BEF suggests that the cut-outs were wrong 50% of the time as well.
Are you talking about Ron or the other bloke? ..'Dynamo not charging'..the three words a Matchless owner least wants to hear ...Ian
Hahaha, Ian, "what Dynamo??" with me, that's the black hole of Lucas! no more dynamo's a total and utter waist of time, have 2 LED bulbs now, and not afraid of using it in the dark (still have no car) so battery lasts about a fortnight.
Ron, you must be getting good at it, can you do my gearbox too??
Ron are you bored or somthing rebuilding a perfectly good engine ! plenty of work in my workshop for at least ten years, Ron tell us more about the high lift cams, have you got part nos, I was once told by the guy who used to rebuild forks, I think his name was Lynn, used to have an advert in the Jampot mag,use a later model valve rockers 55 onwards, or was it the 500 single ones I bet you know. As I am about to re start a build on a desert G3L bike that I nearly finished five years back, just didnt like the paint colour, by the way Going to use the german desert colour from jeep parts. This seems a good time to think about cams rockers ect and a one inch carb,PS,I like the painted cases, andrew.h.
Matchless high lift cams were introduced somewhere in the mid fifties and have the letter H struck into them, as far as I can remember.
But then you would be wise to use the twin start oil pump (and matching timing shaft) and then you may have to increase the return capacity of the cam followers by peplacing them with the 5 groove model, so you do not get a oil back log in the pushrod tubes and in your cylinderhead.
Russell's should be able to tell you more about this, or some of the wizards of the AMC owners club?
OK chaps this is what I did and why. Firstly the bike was not originally re-built by me. It was not running as it should be. So I had the carb and mag professionally refurbed. But still not enough power and lots of smoke.
So I decided on a top end overhaul. The original cams were in a terrible state, and the only new ones available from "AMC Classic Spares" are the post war high lift cams. When using these cams, a small amount of ally must be removed inside the timing case to allow the followers to drop down further. (I can go into more detail if required and also advice on timing marks)
I had a rebore and used an oversize Hepolite piston which had about 1/4" machined off the bottom to bring it more towards the weight of the original Wellworthy piston. Another mod is to drill a 1/16" hole in the rocker box oil well to reduce the oiling of the exhaust guide. (Again details on request). Ron
Is this the picture you meant Henri? Taken before I fitted the stainless spindle parts Jan made.
