Re: Forum picture

The photo appears in Peter Hartley's Matchless history and is captioned as 'Normandy'...but it's also captioned as 'D-Day' which strikes me as most unlikely !

Oh Dear ! I've just looked the caption up on the Corbis archive...He's an American ! The date of 9th September 1944 could well be correct.

McCombe was a well-known photographer who worked for 'Picture Post' Magazine :-

Re: Leonard McCombe

So it isn't likely that it are Henk and Leon on that bike?

I had changed "American Sergeant" to Soldier with the photo as I didn't think it was an American.

Re: Leonard McCombe

He's got the "TT" of 50 Div on his arm with "Durham LI" on the shoulder tag.

He'll be 151st Infantry brigade but could be 6th, 8th or 9th battalion DLI.

Re: Forum picture

Rob. Not the DLI the chaps got s sargent stripes of a yank, look in the middle of the chevrons.

Re: Forum picture

They look like British (or Commonwealth) stripes and with a red cross and a crown above. RMS ?

If the Matchless is his then the '62' indicates 9th Durham LI.

Each RAP (Regimental Aid Post) had a Regimental Medical Sergeant attached.

Re: Forum picture

who ever he is its a great photo of a proper motobike..that pic has been a favourite of mine for a long time...may not even be his bike as WD motorbikes are great props for photoing kids on as much then as there are now...tank number makes it made about Aug 1943...
