Brake Shoe wear

just a quickie to all you experienced M20 boys. Looking at my brake shoes , front and back they dont appear to have a lot of depth from the rivet head to the ferodo and before I change them, I wonder whether anyone has the data for the brake shoe material thickness and or the usual depth of the rivets from the surface? thanks

Re: Brake Shoe wear

Hi Andrew..Thickness of the lining when new should be .156" with replacement recommended at .140". They are OK to run as long as the rivets don't contact the drum..so scrap them when it gets close!...Ian

Re: Brake Shoe wear

I thought the fronts and rears were different thicknesses?

Re: Brake Shoe wear

Hi Dave..No, they're the same front and rear...Ian

Re: Brake Shoe wear

Might be a stupid question but do you chaps recommend using the engine as braking rather than brake shoes... other than in an emergency of course. Does using the engine this way put any more strain or wear on it?

Re: Brake Shoe wear

thanks Ian, I will take a look at them tomorrow and measure them up. They are definitely not in touch with the rivets and there is not much brake dust in the drums, so maybe they are nearer the prescribed thickness than I think. cheers A
