Ive started to work on the BSA, tank off etc. I took the head off today as I have no compression, so what I found was surface rust in the engine barrel where the carb fits, exhaust valve stuck open due to rust as Ive parked her up and not run the engine for about 9 weeks.
My main question is, now Ive made the valves move freely, with tapping and a bit of wd40, can I just put it all back together, or should I take the valves out and clean all the surface rust out where the airs got to it, doesnt look very pretty, but the valve as I say are all free.
so would it be OK to put it all back together again now the ex valve is free? would I need to take the barrel off, valves out and clean it lightly? sorry to be a muppet but engines arent my thing, I just ride em' ;-)
Hi Kit..As you have had a recent top end overhaul there shouldn't be any issues with valve to guide clearance, so if you have got everything moving ok you should be alright to reassemble everything...your next job is to sort out that damp garage! .
If you are leaving the bike for some time in that sort of environment, while the engine is still warm after running slowly kick it over until it comes up to compression..ie so both valves are closed, and stick an oil soaked rag into the carb mouth and the exhaust tail pipe. That will keep the damp atmoshere out while it is standing...Ian
cool thanks Ian, when I put back the head gasket, do I need to heat it up and quench it or best replace with a new one, again if a new one, do I need to heat it? Last question has anyone got a head gasket for sale? ;-)
Hi Kit..If you have a solid copper head gasket just heat it to red throughout, taking care not to overdo it, and then quench quickly in cold water..it will then be ready for reuse...Ian
