Cycle thread taps and dies

as I am putting the M20 back together I am running into quite a few nuts and bolts that could do with a tap or die running down them. Does anyone know of a good supplier of a basic CEI kit of taps and dies?

Or you could try

http://www.tapdie.com/

I seem to remember someone saying they actually supply Tracy Tools.

I would try and work out exactly what you need and get the taps etc singly rather than buy a "set"

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

The Chap at the Tap and Die company is quite helpful..he will make up a 'boxed set' with your selection of sizes...Ian

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

ok thats great. Then for all you expert M20 ers, what do I need? 1/4, 5/16, 3/8. Will that do the majority? As an aside, are the engine bolts BSF? and what abou the barrel studs and nuts?

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

My first set was a rather cheap set made from carbon steel, I wouldn't recommend these, take the HSS

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

Yes, HSS is great! Up to the moment that a tap breaks off in the hole....
Depending on the material, a tool steel one can be removed without too much trouble, but a HSS one can usually only be removed by electro-erosion, DAMHIK

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

Andrew, those three sizes you mentioned are the most common on an M20. But if you look in the technical section of this site. Ian has posted every thread size.

Re: Cycle thread taps and dies

I have only done the engine, gearbox and primary..and missed a few from that I'm afraid. There are multiple thread forms and sizes on the M20 if you want them all. The sizes you have mentioned are a good starting point..with 1/4" and 5/16" Whitworth as useful extras for cleaning out threads in the Aluminium parts.
I would definitely go with HSS..specially if you intend to make fasteners..they last a lot longer.
I have added the various sizes periodically to my collection and have a lot of the less commonly needed and unusual ones (like the 20 tpi cycle taps and dies used in various places).
It's probably best to start with the minimum and only add what you really need as you do the job.
As I do ALL the jobs at different times unfortunately I need the lot!...Ian
