Gearbox sleeve nut

I've taken the plunge, I'm going to replace the main bearing in the gearbox to stop the massive oil leak.

I can't get the sleeve nut off though - any tips? Note, the rest of the box is already apart.

Re: Gearbox sleeve nut

Andy use a old piece of chain wrapped around sprocket then clamp open ends in vice to stop sprocket from turning then use a c spanner or brass drift to undo nut (r/h thread).. Dave..

Re: Gearbox sleeve nut

Ah. Excuse my ignorance, but if it's a r/h thread does that mean it comes undone clockwise?? I've been trying to undo anti clockwise...

Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Re: Gearbox sleeve nut

Thanks chaps, i'll give the chain wrench idea a go.

On another note, when I took this apart, there was a small felt washer behind the cork washer - is this normal?

Re: Gearbox sleeve nut

Got the bugger! An oil filter chain wrench did it in the end.

I'm assuming I dont really need to worry about a sealed bearing on the inner side? I presume oil is supposed to move from the inner and outer part of the gearbox anyway?

Below is a picture of the felt washer I was talking about.

Oh, almost forgot, when the sealed bearing goes in, do the metal shims and felt washer still need to go in to make up the clearances?
