I'd guess that they're called a 'Maxlite' because they allow the maximum light through whilst complying with the blackout regulations.
Henri, you refer to the 'early' 8" light - in fact the services, particularly the army, continued with the manilla paper masks well into 1941 and this was the cause of correspondence in the motorcycle press from civilians complaining that they were being warned for having masks which did not comply with regulations.
I had an idea that the masks with the brand name were those sold on the commercial market.
