Gents, thanks for a great forum. I recently aquired a reasonably original but tatty XM20 in running condition and will have many questions over the next few months.
My rear wheel has a very small clearance between the mudgun and the rim on the right hand side and a large clearance on the left hand side. Since the rim has been painted many times and does not run true, I am planning to re-spoke, possibly with a new rim. I would like correct the alignment. Do I need to measure up from scratch or are there published factory measurements to work from?
I think we have had this one before and it seems the main criteria is that the rear wheel is in line with the frame down tubes. Obviously easier to measure if you have the mudguard etc off.
It's like Pete says, the centre of the rim should be in line with the two front frame down tubes. These rear frames get bend easily so see if yours is still ok, it's quite easy to straighten it once the wheel is out.
