Brake plate siezed in drum

Hi All,
Am stripping a front brake and the brake shoes are seized into the drum making removal impossible at present.
Normally, with bonded on linings the bonding lets go and you can remove the brake shoe material afterwards. These are rivited on I should think so this ain't going to happen.
Before I go at it with large lump hammer mark 1 can anybody suggest a way that won't ruin the brake plate?
I have soaked it in oil so far and am considering dousing it with boiling water.
Help!
Regards
Clive

Re: Brake plate siezed in drum

Hi Clive..If you remove the brakeshoe fulcrum pivot nut and washer and the brake operating arm and nut you may be able to get the plate off and leave the other bits behind..you would then have direct access to the shoes with WD 40 or similar. I often find immersing the whole thing in the parts washing tank for a few days (or some diesel) followed by the application of some heat works wonders...Ian ..

Re: Brake plate siezed in drum

I was stripping some MG Midget axles with the same problem. I found the brake liners to be somewhat water soluable.

I soaked them, and a day later, they crumbled away.

Cheers
