Frame repair

I am very pleased with the response to my plea for a front frame half I posted 2 weeks ago. Robb Nortier is sending me one of his to part out. Now, has anyone out there successfully changed out the front downtube and seat tube? I am aware that the assembly pins must be located and drilled out. I have some bent A10 plunger frames to practise on, but cannot pull the top tube out of the headstock. I have drilled out the pins and heated the headstock to orange-red, but my largest welding tip is a #6, and this will not give a uniform orange color to the entire forging.

Has anyone out there done this? Will it result in dangerously embrittled steel? I am planning to build a jig to position the WM20 tubes and headstock for reassembly.

Any other advice?

Re: Frame repair

I would probably not un-do the brazing but rather cut the front down tube in half and weld the tubes together with a piece of tube inside the two halves. I have done repairs like this on other frames before and that worked very well.
