Steering head bearing cup removal

Since I don't have the factory threaded drift, I face a challenge in removing the steering head bearing cups from the frame. Any tips, ideas, how hard are they in the steering hear casting?
First thought was to weld a bar across the center hole to beat them out, then I thought al aluminum or hardwood cylincer of appropriate diameter could be threaded into the threaded portion,to self-cut some threads, and tapped out from the other end in same way as factory tool.
Any help, has anybody done this lately?
Cheers, and Merry Christmas,
Vince

Vince the easy option if you are going to replace them is the welded bar technique. Tap them out whilst still hot and they come out easy. Ron
