Did any of had this happen to your big-end? Does any of you have a replacement con-rod and big-end for a 1930's 500 cc OHV Sloper?

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

What sound did it make when this happened....

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Hans..An bloody expensive sound ...If the guy can't find an original big end I might be able to help with a newly manufactured one (subject to examining the crank and original pin to determine the exact spec.)
I can't help with a conrod but Peter at Cornucopia would be worth a try...also Mark at British Spares Austria. Both a bit pricey though, especially Mark. Gilbert Bredimus in Luxembourg might be worth a try as well...or Leon (unless it's his crank!!).
Alternatively, can another rod be modified? That depends on the overall dimensions, but for example, an M20 rod machined down narrower at the big end..Ian

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

I wasn't there when it happened but it came to a grinding halt It's from the BSA Sloper from a friend of me, I'll let him know that you can have a big end made.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Will the M20 pin, race and bearings fit? I don't have my parts book to hand, but there were a lot of BSA's that used the same pin

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Dave,

I could try that. The length of the conrod seems to be the same as from a B31.

Thanks,
Henk.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Do you have the rod number? I'll keep my eyes peeled for one, theres a guy that does 1930's BSA spares at one of the monthly jumbles I attend

email (option): davmax@ntlworld.com

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Henk, If the B31 conrod is the same length as the Sloper one then you may be 'in business'. This would work fine as a substitute. You will need to check the width of the rod at the big end and machine the sides to the Sloper rods dimension if required.
The B31 rod is stronger around the big end anyway.
I didn't see a cage in the original pics...is the Sloper big end a 'crowded roller' type?
If so the pin will probably be a different diameter to the B31 type. Worth a look though. I'd be interested to see a picture of the pin when the crank is stripped....Ian

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Ian,

Here a picture of conrod including the pin.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Well, it's nothing like a B31 big end!...Much smaller and lighter with different tapers. Is it a single or double row of rollers? It's a bit hard to get the scale from the picture...Ian

email (option): julie@wright52.plus.com

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

It had a single row of rollers, the rollers are quite a bit bigger then the M or B model bigend.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

I have a lot of big ends I can't identify, I have a new big end that looks like that one, but can I have some dimensions as I couldn't identify in my Alpha catalogue (it must been discontinued by them before 1970) Can I have the
length (overall)
length from tapers
diameter of threads
diameter of race
diameter of outer race
diameter of the inside of race
width of race and any more dimensions

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Dave,

It's a friends bike and I don't have the parts here I'll ask him for dimensions.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

This one was the one I thought it may have been, but mine is smaller in length, but surprisingly it has a larger bearing surface

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Henk, I have e mailed the guy who makes my bigends regarding this one. I'll let you know what he says when I get a reply. It might be useful if you draw a blank with replacement parts.By the way...what is the length and diameter of the rollers?....Ian

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

I have send him an email for these sizes.

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

cant the bigend be repair welded and re machined to size the re hardend

Re: BSA big-end (not M20) trouble

Hi Ian / Dave,

The rollers are 5/16 x 5/16 and the con-rod has part number 24-281.

Leon is also taking a look in his Tasmanian parts lot so this BSA might be back on the road again soon (hopefully).

These signs sold in seconds. That sign on the left was bought some years ago by Kris in the USA.

I spoke to the guy that deals in 1930's BSA parts, he didn't have a rod with him, but he said he may have one at home, I'll ring him tomorrow night.
