Putin has succeeded in making Obama appear to be weak and a fool in dealing with Syria.

Even though Obama tried to take some of the credit for the proposal to place Assad’s chemical weapons under international control, it was clear that Putin was in charge. CNN reported that Putin is now demanding that the United States and other countries give up their plans for military action against Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that the plan to avert an international military strike in Syria by having Syria's government hand over its chemical weapons "will only mean anything if the United States and other nations supporting it tell us that they're giving up their plan to use force against Syria."

The Russian leader added, "You can't really ask Syria, or any other country, to disarm unilaterally while military action against it is being contemplated."

Assad’s leadership group has stated they are in agreement and will give up their chemical weapons.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said Tuesday, before leaving Moscow, that his government is "ready to fully cooperate" with a Russian initiative that would include Damascus joining the Chemical Weapons Convention and turning over its chemical weapons.

"We are ready to disclose the location(s) of chemical weapons, stop manufacturing chemical weapons, also show the locations to representatives from Russia and other countries and the U.N.," Moallem said in his remarks, as translated from Arabic.

However, Putin’s proposal is going to be a lot of smoke and mirrors. As The Wall Street Journal and Stratfor’s Geopolitical Diary point out, securing and destroying Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles will be all but impossible.

If the Russian diplomatic solution to the Syrian imbroglio sounds too good to be true, that's because it is. The logistical complications alone far exceed Russia's diplomatic ambitions. Syria is believed to have 1,000 tons of chemical weapons stockpiles dispersed among 50 different sites across the country. The majority of these bases are located in areas where the regime has relatively secure control, but some suspected sites are located in battle zones between regime forces and rebels. For example, rebel forces have regularly targeted Safira Defense Factories in Aleppo province.

Putin Wins Again As Obama Puts Attack On Hold

Starting just 1 minute late, the President begab by unapologetically conjuring images of WWI and WWII and stuck to the line that "we know" Assad was responsible for killing his own people with Sarin. Then moved to fear-mongery over what Iran might do, adding that he was very much for strikes. But, in giving Congress the hot potato he knew decision would be difficult. The US military does not do 'pin p r i c k i n g and a "targeted" strike will send a message to Assad. While recognizing the need for a diplomatic solution, Obama made it clear that those efforts would follow a military strike. . But then, after all the angry banter, he then backed down and said, will work for peaceful solution by putting the strike on hold and will bring a resolution to UN. Ending on a more aggressive note, he warned Republican and Democrat lawmakers to rethink their opposition to the strikes should they be needed.

Syria crisis: Barack Obama puts military strike on hold

US President Barack Obama has put military action against Syria on hold and vowed to pursue diplomacy to remove the regime's chemical weapons.

Damascus now admits it has chemical weapons and has agreed to abide by a Russian plan to hand over its arsenal.

The US had threatened strikes after a gas attack killed hundreds last month.

On the ground, the army is trying to retake the Christian town of Maaloula. The BBC's Jeremy Bowen, at the scene, says heavy fighting is continuing.

Maaloula had been overrun by rebel forces including members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, at the weekend.

Some Syrian media reported that the government forces had recaptured the town.

But our Middle East editor says the fighting is ongoing, with al-Nusra still present in parts of the town. He says smoke is rising from some districts and he has seen injured government soldiers being evacuated.

More than 100,000 people have died since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in 2011.

Meanwhile, the latest report by UN rights experts, released on Wednesday, says torture and rape are widespread and war crimes are being committed by both sides.

I love the way they say the Syrians now admit they have chemical weapons, do they think we are stupid, Syria has never tried to hide the fact they have chemical weapons

Yesterday on FoxNews, you could've knocked me over with a feather, when I heard these words, re: Vladamir Putin--b/c someone said something about "hook in the jaw."
