While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

Hello All:

My 1945 WM20 is leaking oil from where the kickstart quadrant passes through the outer gearbox cover. I replaced the kickstart quadrant bush which helped a bit but did not solve the problem. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and would care to suggest possible remedies?
Many Thanks, Barry
PS My apologies to the late Mr. Harrison

Re: While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

Lower the oil level or machine a groove for an O ring.

Re: While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

did you replace the quadrant as well ?
There is no way that the box will ever be oil tight.
They were not like that when new and now that all the shaft holes have worn oval they won't get any better with age.
I had mine reground round then a custom bush made up to suit with .005" clearance .
Worked for about a year or so.

Re: While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

Standard clearance between the bush I.D and the quadrant O.D is .0005"-.0025"..Ian

Re: While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

I have found with old bBurman boxes that a thick-ish felt washer between the pedal and the case will slow it down considerably.

you will have to make one of course.

Re: While My Gearbox Gently Weeps

Thank you all for the advice. I think I will start with the new quadrant and go from there.
Best regards, Barry
