The 90s...

OUT has gone ahead with a 50-track-deep 90s list. Again, not sure of eligibility, but passing along. Huge omission? "Vogue," of course.

Re: The 90s...

And you are "Anonymous" in the comments on the Out page...?

I need to think about whether these should be included.

Re: The 90s...

LOL Yes. I didn't feel like registering for the site, so in that instance, I was "Anonymous."

Henrik, what are your thoughts on the 100 Lesbian Albums and The Guardian's "My Favorite Albums" lists?

Re: The 90s...

Hmmm...

As much as I like to sing along / dance my ass off to a lot of these songs, too many of them are listed simply because they have a substantial gay following (or because they are a bit naughty) and not because they are actually LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered).

I don’t mean to rain on this gay parade, but I wish these gay publications and websites would focus more on songs that are actually LGBT-themed when they make these kinds of lists instead of just listing songs that people would like to hear when they go to a gay club. It would be amusing if one of these publications could make a list about less stereotypical gay genres like angry Queercore or Homo Hop (which has to be one of the best names for a music genre, ever! )

That said, a few of my favourite LGBT-themed songs from the 80s and 90s are listed above:

The Smiths – This Charming Man (they could just as easily have gone for How Soon Is Now, Hand In Glove or Handsome Devil, among others)
Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax
Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy
Air – Sexy Boy
k.d. lang – Constant Craving
Blur – Girls and Boys
White Town – Your Woman
The Magnetic Fields – The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side (or about half of the songs on 69 Love Songs)
The songs by Pet Shop Boys (Go West could have been added)
The George Michael songs (Outside could have been added)

Some glaring omissions - perhaps because most of them are not mainstream or notorious enough:

Willie Nelson – Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other
Rufus Wainwright – Danny Boy / In My Arms
The Lemonheads – Big Gay Heart
Suede – Animal Nitrate
Soft Cell – Tainted Love
Army of Lovers – Sexual Revolution / Crucified / Candyman Messiah
Ben Harper – Mama’s Got a Girlfriend Now
Billy Bragg – Sexuality
Pete Shelley – Homosapien
Joe Jackson – Real Men
Of Montreal – Tim I Wish You Were Born a Girl
Belle & Sebastian – Seeing Other People / The State I Am In
La Cage Aux Folles [Original Broadway Cast] – I Am What I Am
