Re: Xlr8 EOY 2011

My tastes lie at a crossroads between the various permutations of UK bass music and more 'conventional' critical tastes (electronic, hip-hop, pop, alternative rock etc) and I safely say these are the best two lists I have come across in 2011 that satisfy the electronic field of my music interests.

In the Releases field, they have 13 of my top 50 releases of the year (EPs by Scuba, HudMo included) and list a handful that sit just outside (Oneohtrix, Martyn, Hecker).

In the Tracks section, I see some of the very best releases of the year that have been slept on by all but a select few websites - Pearson Sound, Bok Bok, Instra:Mental, Mosca, xxxy, Tycho, Dark Sky, Jamie xx, 'Unknown' (Joy Orbison) and my personal favourite, also their no.1, the infallible house/garage anthem of the year 'Battle For Middle You' by Julio Bashmore.

If anyone is ever interested in exploring the ever-evolving and ever fascinating world of - largely UK-based - garage/house/techno/old-school electro hybrids, this is a great starting point. Generally bass-heavy but rarely under the now close to redundant 'dubstep' tag, this is music you can vibe to alone or with others, nodding your head at your desk or getting down low in a club. It's been a passion of mine for many years and though not to everyone's tastes, some of the best music around - to my ears - is found in the grey area between electronic genres. Looking simultaneously to the future and over its shoulder, there's a ton of terrific stuff waiting to be discovered. I'd be happy to give suggestions as well if anyone's a bit lost!

Anyway, rant over. Superb lists.
