Films of the '80s: 1986

Since nobody has serious objections with sticking to three weeks, and since I personally seriously prefer 3 weeks both for the time to watch films and the time to collate since I'm rather busy with exams at the moment, I'm sticking to 3 weeks.

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is September 5th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1986, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Down by Law, Le Déclin de l'Empire Américain and Manhunter. But you can tell that from my list.

I didn't really like Caravaggio, but it's different, so maybe you will.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

Blue Velvet
The Sacrifice
Hannah and her Sisters
The Fly
Shadows In Paradise
Matador
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Caravaggio (5 pts)
Mauvais Sang (3 pts)

I might end up adding She's Gotta Have It to this. Don't think I will have time to see Down By Law or Aliens, but it looks like they're going to qualify anyway.

I thought I had almost nothing for 1987, but now it seems a lot of films I thought were 1988 are actually 1987. Damnation, Wings of Desire. Two huge ones.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

1. Manon des sources [Manon of the Spring]
2. Stand by Me
3. Blue Velvet
4. Hannah and Her Sisters
5. Jean de Florette
6. Varjoja paratiisissa [Shadows in Paradise]
7. 天空の城ラピュタ [Laputa: Castle in the Sky]
8. Crocodile Dundee

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

Rank Title Year Points Rating
1 31 David Lynch - Blue Velvet 1986 5.97 93
2 105 Jim Jarmusch - Down By Law 1986 2.53 80
3 256 Alex Cox - Sid and Nancy 1986 1.31 65
4 303 Rob Reiner - Stand By Me 1986 1.07 64
5 307 Jim Henson - Labyrinth 1986 1.05 64
6 453 John Hughes - Ferris Buellers Day Off 1986 -1.17 60

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

Total domination by Lynch with everyone voting for Blue Velvet, for the first time in the '80s poll, and more than half of the voters placing it at #1.

1. Blue Velvet (David Lynch) - 554/15/8
2. Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch) - 292/8/1
3. Hannah and Her Sisters (Woody Allen) - 218/10/0
4. Platoon (Oliver Stone) - 212/8/1
5. Aliens (James Cameron) - 202/7/1
6. Stand By Me (Rob Reiner) - 168/6
7. The Fly (David Cronenberg) - 145/8/0
8. Offret [The Sacrifice] (Andrei Tarkovsky) - 119/6/0
9. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (John Hughes) - 109/7/0
10. Varjoja Paratiisissa [Shadows in Paradise] (Aki Kaurismäki) - 101/4/1

Almost:
Something Wild (95)
37°2 Le Matin [Betty Blue] (92)

Cameron, Cronenberg, Jarmusch, Lynch, Reiner and Tarkovsky all get a second film through, and Woody Allen joins the ranks of Spielberg and Scorsese in having 3 films in the final. In other words there are only 3 new directors through to the next round, probably a first.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

Totally forgot my own list.

1. Blue Velvet
2. Aliens
3. Down By Law
4. Platoon
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
6. The Fly
7. Stand By Me
8. Hannah And Her Sisters
9. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
10. Big Trouble In Little China

Re: Films of the '80s: 1986

I just saw Aliens. It's a good film but the 'Everyone is stupid except Ripley' thing is overplayed to comic proportions. Every other scene is like:

Ripley "Come on everybody, let's do this obviously sensible thing!"
Other person "I have an idea! Let's try to jump down the aliens' throats and choke them to death!"
